A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published in the American Heart Journal assessed the efficacy and safety of transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale compared with medical therapy following an initial cryptogenic stroke. The findings revealed that transcatheter closure is associated with a remarkable reduction in the risk of stroke compared to medical management. However, a significant increase in the incidence of atrial arrhythmias with device therapy was noticed. There was no increase in the rates of bleeding, death or any adverse events with device therapy.
